Skagit River (Upper)

Overview

The Upper Skagit River, from Marblemount to Rockport, offers a truly scenic and generally mild whitewater experience through the North Cascades. This is more of a scenic float with splashy Class II-II+ rapids, making it ideal for families with younger children or those looking for a relaxing day on the water surrounded by stunning mountain views. The river is fed by glacial melt, so the water is cold and often takes on a beautiful turquoise hue. The season is primarily spring and summer. Access is easy along Highway 20, the North Cascades Highway. While not a 'thrill a minute' run, the scenery is absolutely top-tier, with opportunities to spot bald eagles (especially in winter) and other wildlife. Skill level is beginner to intermediate. No permits are typically required for day trips. The main trade-off is the lack of big rapids, but for those prioritizing scenery and a gentle introduction to rafting, it's perfect. Expect pristine water and a genuine sense of being in the wilderness.
