Overview
While Moose Lake can be a bustling entry point with towboats, bypassing them to reach Knife Lake quickly puts you into prime BWCA territory. The route involves some portaging, but none are excessively long, and the reward is one of the BWCA's most iconic lakes. Knife Lake is large, dotted with islands, and features some of the deepest water in the wilderness. Its diverse shoreline and numerous bays offer endless exploration and a good chance to find a private campsite. It’s a favored spot for fishing, particularly lake trout. The sense of deep wilderness is strong here. Nearest town is Ely. Expect more people at the entry, but Knife Lake is big enough to absorb them. Strong winds are a real concern on such a large body of water. Early or late season trips can be magical here, with fewer crowds and stunning foliage or ice-out conditions. Permits are highly competitive for this entry.
