Numbered Lakes Loop (Entry Point 30, Lake One)

Overview

While Lake One is a popular entry point, sticking to the chain of Numbered Lakes (One, Two, Three, Four) and looping back offers a relatively easy flatwater experience with scenic beauty. The portages between these lakes are short and well-trodden, designed for easy travel. Once you get past Lake One, the crowds thin out, and the sense of wilderness grows. This route provides a good balance of accessibility and solitude. You'll find plenty of good campsites, often on islands, providing excellent views and privacy. The area is known for good fishing, particularly for walleye and northern pike. Nearest town is Ely. Peak season will see more traffic, so consider shoulder seasons for a quieter trip. Water levels are generally stable, but high winds can make the larger lakes challenging. This is an excellent choice for first-timers to the BWCA or families looking for a less strenuous adventure.
