Dense suburban-edge herds, generous antlerless permits, and a shotgun-only firearms season make Massachusetts a sleeper for patient bowhunters and still-hunters.

Massachusetts is a state of contrasts: dense suburban-edge deer habitat inside and around Route 495 holds some of the highest deer densities in the Northeast, while the Berkshires and Pioneer Valley in the west offer more traditional big-woods hunting with lower deer density and more public land.
