Arrow anatomy: every part, and what it changes

The arrow is the weapon; the bow just launches it. Understand each component before you buy a dozen you cannot tune.

Traditional bows produce a fraction of the kinetic energy of a compound, so a traditional arrow has to earn penetration through mass, balance and a shaving-sharp two-blade head rather than speed.

This is a reference for the parts: what shaft material buys you, how point weight and inserts shift the balance point, what fletching size and helical do to a broadhead in flight, and how to calculate front-of-center in two minutes with a ruler.

Shaft

Spine and length

Spine must match your actual draw weight, arrow length and point weight. Leave an inch of clearance past the shelf at full draw so a broadhead can never contact your bow hand.

Point and insert

125–300 grains

The main lever for both FOC and tune. Brass inserts add 50–100 grains at the very front and are the cheapest way to raise FOC without changing heads. Match field point weight to broadhead weight exactly or your practice means nothing.

Broadhead

Two blades, cut-on-contact

Single-bevel and standard two-blade heads split bone and keep driving at traditional speeds. Mechanicals steal energy you do not have opening blades, and most states ban them for certain species anyway. Sharpen to shaving sharp and re-strop after every stalk.

Fletching

Feathers, not vanes

Natural feathers crush against the shelf and rebound; plastic vanes do not, so they bounce the arrow off line. Run 4–5 inch feathers with a helical or strong offset to steer a broadhead, and keep the cock feather out from the riser.

Nock

Fit matters

The nock should hold the arrow on a horizontal string and release with a light tap. Too tight and the string drags the arrow off line; too loose and it falls off during a draw at eighteen yards from a bedded buck.

Wrap and crest

Optional

Arrow wraps make fletching replacement easy and give you a bright tracking band; traditional cresting does the same job with paint. Neither affects flight in any way you can shoot.

Calculate front-of-center in two minutes

FOC is the percentage of the arrow's length that the balance point sits ahead of centre. Higher FOC means better broadhead steering and deeper penetration at the cost of trajectory.

  1. 1Build the arrow completely: shaft cut to length, insert, point, nock, fletching.
  2. 2Measure the total length from the throat of the nock to the end of the shaft (not the point tip).
  3. 3Balance the arrow on a ruler edge and mark the balance point.
  4. 4Measure from the throat of the nock to the balance point.
  5. 5FOC = ((balance distance − (length ÷ 2)) ÷ length) × 100. Aim for 18–25% on hunting arrows.

Frequently asked

What is a good FOC for traditional arrows?
Eighteen to twenty-five percent for hunting. That range steers a fixed broadhead reliably, recovers fast from a finger release, and drives penetration at the low speeds a recurve produces. Extreme FOC above thirty percent penetrates well but drops steeply past twenty yards, which matters when your ranging is done by eye.
How heavy should a traditional hunting arrow be?
Nine to eleven grains per pound of your actual draw weight — roughly 450–550 grains from a 50 lb bow. Heavier arrows absorb more of the bow's energy, shoot quieter, and penetrate deeper, which is the entire strategy of a traditional setup.
Can I use plastic vanes on a recurve?
Not on a bow shot off the shelf. Vanes are stiff and bounce the arrow off line as they pass the rest. Use 4–5 inch natural feathers with helical or offset — they crush and rebound, and they steer a broadhead far better at traditional speeds.
Are wood arrows worth it?
For the experience and for selfbow shooters, yes. Wood shafts must be weighed, spine-matched and hand-straightened, and they break more often. They shoot beautifully when matched, but nobody should learn to tune on them — start with carbon, then build a wood set once you know what tuned flight looks like.
